When removing power from an inductive load, a large reverse-voltage may develop, which has the capacity to cause damage to digital switching modules. In extreme cases, excess reverse voltage may cause overheating of circuit components, and subsequent fire. To enable this reverse-voltage to be dissipated safely, you must install a flyback-diode in the power circuit for the inductive load.
